About: Word Counter
The word counter analyzes your text as you type or paste it: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences and paragraphs, along with an estimated reading time and speaking time. Use it to stay within a limit for an essay, an article, a meta description or a social media post, or to time a speech or a presentation before you give it.
Features
- Counts words, characters with and without spaces, sentences and paragraphs, updated on every keystroke.
- Reading time estimated at 200 words per minute and speaking time at 130, both adjustable from 50 to 1000.
- One button copies the whole text, another clears the editor, and undo and redo are always available.
- Analysis runs in your browser, and the text is kept in the page address so it survives a reload.
How to use it
- Paste or type your text into the editor.
- Read the statistics in the side panel, which update live.
- Adjust the reading or speaking speed to refine the estimated durations.
Questions about usage
A word is any run of characters between spaces or line breaks. Contractions and hyphenated words like don't or well-known count as one word, while a standalone dash surrounded by spaces also counts as a word. Sentences are detected from periods, question marks, exclamation marks and ellipses.
About 5 minutes at 200 words per minute, the default silent reading speed. Read aloud at 130 words per minute, it takes closer to 7 min 42 s. Real speeds vary with the reader and the text, so adjust both values in the panel to match your case.
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser. The text is kept in the page address after the #, a part browsers never send to the server. Keep in mind that sharing that address also shares the text it contains.
